Last nights or should I say this mornings (for those of us this side of the Atlantic) Golden Globes had as many gags as gongs with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the helm once again. The sharp wits and sheer unpredictability of the pair kept the audience and nominees on the edge of their seats as they preyed on the double standards of the industry with Hollywoods favorite leading men baring the brunt of their punchlines. One does however have to note that if it were a male duo hosting the show and zinging similar one-liners at Hollywoods leading ladies would it be viewed in such a humorous light, but that is a discussion, perhaps, for another day.
The industries double standards got a slap up 'side of the face with reference to Matthew McConaughey’s portrayal in ‘Dallas Buyer’s Club’ “Matthew McConaughey was great. He lost 45 pounds, or what actresses call 'being in a movie.”
However it wasn’t just the dynamic duo that is Fey and Poehler that gave us the nights most memorable moments. Before the show started Jennifer Lawrence was up to her old tricks when she photobombed Taylor Swift on the red carpet. This girl just keeps on giving us more reasons to love her.
Emma Thompson had the audience beside themselves with applause and laughter when she arrived on stage to present the best screen play award with her Christian Louboutin heels in one hand and a Martini in the other. Thompson then pointed to the soles of her shoes and said “I just want you to know, this red? It’s my blood.” She then threw them over her shoulder, to the horror of women worldwide, before presenting the award. Thompson may or may not have had ‘a few in her’ but she gets huge points for striping away the airs and graces and just being a woman with a pair of real killer heels who just wanted to free her toes from the torture.
Last but by no means least was director Alfonso Cuaron's acceptance speech when he addressed Sandra Bullock "Sandra, you are the most amazing collaborator," Cuaron said. "I want to thank you for not quitting when you thought that I have told you, 'Sandra, I'm going to give you herpes,' when I really meant to say, 'Sandra, I'm going to give you an earpiece.' " Priceless.
