Seven Easy Ways to get The Best Out Of Your Bridesmaids

They're your best girlfriends, they know all your secrets {like that one time, at bandcamp...}, and now you've asked them to be your bridesmaids. But what does a bridesmaid actually do? As a bride who had five fabulous maids, these are my top tips on how to get the best out of your girls. For more bridesmaid inspiration, be sure to check out my Pinterest board.

♥ Ask them nicely! It's an honour to be asked to be a bridesmaid, and you want to build some excitement around the anticipation of your wedding day. So take your friend out for glamorous cocktails, and make a bit of an event out of popping the question. This makes it sound like a proposal! But any excuse for cocktails....

♥ You could even send them a card. I featured these gorgeous bridesmaid cards a few weeks ago. Or even a fabulous DIY bridesmaid box, like this one made by Bethany on her blog Rinse Repeat.

♥ Make it clear right from the start who is going to be paying for the bridesmaid dresses. Traditionally the bride paid for the material, and the bridesmaids made their own gowns {!}. Unless your friends are particularly crafty, that's sooooo unlikely to happen, so now the bride's family usually foots the bill. If you want all the girls to be wearing matching shoes, then you'll need to pay for those too.

♥ If you're happy for your girls to choose their own dresses within a certain colour palette, then I recommend sending them a swatch of some sort, so they're all on the same page. For my wedding, I told my bridesmaids I wanted them to wear something in soft grey, which in retrospect was a terrible idea, because it meant they had to buy a grey dress {which they might not have wanted to do}, and they all had a different idea of soft grey. The result was a very un-put-together look, which offended my wedding blogger eye!

♥ Be honest about what you want from your hen night. I'm a control freak, so I told my maid of honour exactly what I wanted, and she organised it on my behalf, with just one extra surprise {not a stripper}. If you're like me, then don't be embarrassed to being a little bit bridezilla, this one time. As long as it doesn't involve spending a crazy amount of money, your maid of honour will probably be relieved.

♥ Give them a good sense of the schedule on the morning of the wedding. They need to be ready before the bride, so they can then help you dress. Are they going to be doing their own hair and make-up? Remember they're going to want to look fabulous as they walk down the aisle {all those people looking}, so give them the time to prepare.

♥ There's a lovely tradition that the groom gives the bridesmaids a present on the morning of his wedding. Now it's more likely for the bride to give her girls a piece of jewellery, to wear with their wedding outfits. If you give them a simple designer bracelet or pendant necklace, then every time they put it on, it'll remind them of your big day!

Real Pearl-Themed Glamorous Barn Wedding: The Reception Details

There's a deliciously warm feeling to this big day. I reckon it's partly down to the lovely cream and gold colour palette, and partly down to the lovely barn reception. I've always loved rustic wedding venues, and barns can be dressed down for a straw bales and bunting-style wedding, or up for a glamorous wedding like this one! Emma and Alistair chose Lains Barn in Oxfordshire for their summer wedding, and used delicate birdcages, vintage pictures frames and orchids in their wedding decorations. You'll want to fill your Pinterest boards with shots of Emma's amazing Justin Alexander wedding gown, her pretty flower girls, their DIY pearl-detail place markers and their hand-stamped sweetie bags. Huge thanks to Kate Gray for her beautiful wedding pictures. I first discovered Kate's creative children's portraits for my baby blog, Before the Baby, so I'm thrilled to now publish her wedding work!

We celebrated our wedding at Lains Barn in Wantage, Oxfordshire on 21st June 2013.

My wedding dress and veil were made by Justin Alexander, my shoes by Karen Millen and my accessories were from Swarovski

Alistair wore a Harrogate suit from Jack Bunneys. Similar to my dress he wanted a simple, contemporary design, that was sophisticated and different from the norm.

We wanted a venue that would provide a relaxed, intimate setting that was great for all ages - e.g. flat for the older party, but private and enclosed for the younger ones.

Our wedding décor was based on our principle of simple and vintage. We didn't have a particular theme, we just chose were mainly creams and golds.

Our wedding favours were simple - a Ferrero Rocher with a small pack of Love Hearts, which we tied inside a gold silk bag.

I went to a friend's wedding last year, and they used fake flowers, but we couldn't tell at first, so we decided to use fake flowers as well. This was partly down to cost but also because I loved the idea that I could keep my bouquet for many years to come. Also I only wanted orchids as my wedding flowers, and that would have been very expensive for the amount we used.

The bouquets and decorations were all from Silk Blooms, and they were all very impressive.

Our DIY projects included our table plan - which we made out of vintage photo frames. We also created our name places, and decorated with bird cages. We also created lots of sweet trees for the guests to pick out during the afternoon.

We opted not to spend too much money on our cake {instead we focused more on the venue, food and outfits}, and as we had a friend who got discount at Waitrose we decided to buy their three-tier Chocolate Wedding Cake with orange liqueur.

We hadn't considered buying our wedding cake from Waitrose, but after tasting all their cakes, we thought it was delicious, and also different from most other wedding cakes – a plus for us!

Probably the best decision we made in planning our day was to choose a friend of my cousin, Kate Gray, as our wedding photographer.

After seeing some of Kate's work online we decided to use her as she has a way of capturing “moments” which we hadn’t seen in others pictures. She was great from start to finish. We knew from our pre-wedding shoot that the photos would be good, but when we got the shots back from our wedding day we were blown away!

We only got engaged six months before the big day, so some things were more stressful to organise than others. Luckily my other half did most of the boring bits and left me to choose the prettier parts of the day!

My advice for other brides would be to focus on what's really important to you, before you start planning the day. Anything labeled 'for a wedding' usually attracts a premium, and the cost of the day can get out of hand quite quickly.

We made a list of things we wanted to be perfect and substituted money from the ones we weren't too bothered about. That way we compromised, but didn't lose sight of what wedding elements were most important to us.

Real Pearl-Themed Glamorous Barn Wedding: Emma & Alistair

There's something glamorous about a cream and gold palette at a wedding. Add a Justin Alexander wedding dress, hundreds of orchid blooms and pretty pearl detailing, and you've got a truly stunning big day. Emma and Alistair chose Lains Barn in Oxfordshire as their wedding venue, and I love the warm intimacy of space, and the romantic drapes and fairy lights. My other loves include Alistair's fantastic modern suit and waistcoat combo from Jack Bunneys, Emma's side ponytail hair-style and Kate Gray's, lovely wedding photography! Plus, I'll let you into Emma's money-saving secret - all the orchids were silk flowers from Silk Blooms rather than fresh blooms. No one could tell, and it means her wedding bouquet will last forever! Stay tuned for Emma and Alistair's wedding reception details, you won't want to miss the pretty birdcage details.

My decision over my wedding dress and veil were based on wanting something elegant, with great attention to small details, but without being over the top.

My bridesmaids' dresses were made by Village Brides near Reading. I chose a champagne-coloured material from their collection, and they created the three gowns for me.

The Skinny On FAD Diets

You lost 2 stone in one month... Gimme a break your not even the same person.

I’ve had it. I’m fed up of fad diets. Not that i’ve tried any, I don’t buy into them but my facebook feed is constantly clogged with promoted posts with preposterous claims on how to loose 2 stone in 10 days and the likes. These ads claiming to loose you 10 pounds in 10 days, get rid of belly fat with these two secrets that won’t make you change your life but will change your waist line etc come with a buy now and receive a 25% discount, free shipping or an extra add on book and are simply ludicrous! I find it immoral that these scam artists are feeding off the overweight and obese sufferers in our society desperately seeking a quick fix to their growing problem. I must admit though that there is also a small cynical part of me that thinks that if they are stupid enough to buy into the idiocracy of these claims they are probably looking to be scammed. There is no quick fix pill, no magic food that will dissolve the fat from your stomach leaving you with a six pack and as for these ads, well to say they are misleading is much more than just an understatement. You’ve all seen the posts I’m talking about, a ‘before’ picture of an over weight girl and an ‘after’ picture of a very slim, toned girl, usually with an obvious boob job, radioactive fake tan and an obscured view of their face in an effort to hide the fact that its a completely different person! Photoshop may be good, but give us some credit we aren’t that stupid!

Some of these fad diets may present real results but these results will be short lived. Weight loss may have become big business but the key to it never was a big secret. You need to eat less calories than you burn. Thats it, simple as. In fact, for those of you who gag at the thought of healthy food, hate being in the kitchen and have a notoriously sweet tooth, well the science is simple, it comes down to calories so realistically you can live on chocolate and cake and still loose weight so long as you keep your calorie intake down. You may not be healthy, because there are no vitamins and really no nutrition in chocolate and cake but you will loose weight, and besides its not as if the cabbage soup diet or the hollywood diet are putting you on the road to life long health benefits.

Obesity is a global epidemic, the only way to combat that is to change our views on food. Fad diets will never work long term because they put unrealistic expectations on the dieters. At the end of the day a little bit of what you like never hurt anyone, but we need to learn to not over indulge. It is amazing to me that in the midst of a global recession when everyones back is against the wall that some of the most thriving businesses are local take aways. Small portions of healthy food is the key to loosing weight, but our society seems to have become increasingly lazy when it comes to preparing and cooking their own food which is in direct conflict with the fact that cooking programs like Masterchef and food channels featuring celebrity chefs are some of the most popular on TV. It would seem that we have become of the mindset that if we watch people cooking beautiful, filling and healthy food, that our work is done and we can feel good about heading to the chippy. It has to be obvious to everyone that thats just not the case, its like the person who pays up their gym membership feels great about it and never goes but wonders why they aren’t getting fitter?

Its self explanatory. To keep fat at a minimum and healthy food a priority we need to get off the sofa and into the kitchen. The only way to know exactly what your eating is to cook it yourself, that means no ready meals and no take outs. You may not loose 2 stone in 10 days but you never would have on one of those diets anyway! You will loose the weight slower but you will keep it off. And instead of the lethargic feelings associated with the likes of the baby food diet more vegetables and less saturated fat will mean that you will have more energy. We need to stop using the word diet and replace it with words like lifestyle and choice. We need to stop striving to loose weight and be skinny and instead strive to maintain a healthy weight and be healthy, be happy in the body you have been given and loose weight to improve your quality of life.
