Spring Has Sprung.... And Fashionably Unsprung!!
Personally i think April fools day is mother natures joke on us in a “Fool if you think spring is here... or ever going to be” manner of speaking, i don’t know, perhaps she had her heart broken by a merry, green clad leprachaun in her youth and she now takes her heartache out on us pale, vitamin D deprived Celts, but, i for one wish she had taken the more conventional heartbreak remedies into account like a new hair cut or comfort eating and left us with some semblance of a spring/summer.
We are now halfway through April and our emerald isle is still more like the charcoal isle. Momentary glints of a blue sky or ray of sunshine (today seems to be one of those glints) are a tease and as we yearn for a warm breeze and are condemned to a grey sky and torrential showers.
All this in mind i hit the shops for a little window shopping and perhaps a small indulgence, what else would you do on a friday afternoon when your unemployed... And low and behold spring has most definately sprung in the world of retail. I know that this is to be expected and the fashion gods that be will not reschedule fashion week and the seasons as they see them to indulge a small island loitering off the end of Europe. And, its not the first time I’ve been to the shops since they began taking their spring summer stock deliveries but i must admit that with every trip i become increasingly frustrated.
I get a tumbling ball of excited butterflies in my gut as i all but salivate over the jeweled tones and bright colours of the spring/summer collections. The sense of fun and freedom that they portray is almost too much to bear. After a winter of layering up like a knitted onion is a flash of flesh not what we desire? My legs haven’t seen a razor since god knows when and I’m starting to wonder if they’re still there. Meanwhile drowning in a sea of fashion frivolity in the form of short shorts, walking shorts, (really have to get that razor out) tea dresses, day dresses, maxi dresses, crop tops, sandles and plimsoles, to name but a few, i am rudely snapped out of my dazed state by a huge kick in the ass from reality.... Where and When will i ever wear these clothes?
Its not just the shops that play with our emotions, the trials and tribulations of spring shoppin are enough to drive any self respecting woman through the full range of emotions from happy and excited to frustrated and frankly pi**ed off in all of 60 seconds, all our favorite glossy magazines from home and abroad tease and tantalize us with images of our cross atlantic cousins and mediterranean neighbours sun-drenched and scantily clad looking oh so effortlessly chic. There is no escaping the on-slaught of jealousy pangs incurred as we flick through said glossy pages or the fact that we have many more months of this to endure before the fail-safe autumn winter collections hit our rails once more and we can shop once again in the peace of practicality.
The fact is this tiny isle we live in just does not allow us the indulgence of the summer wardrobe we yearn for.... But when do we take the plunge? Should we just throw caution (and common sense) to the wind and embrace all that is s/s 2013?
The problem is I for one just cant resist... Can You?
