10 Tips For Avoiding Pain In Heels

Any of you who follow me on Instagram or Facebook will know that I have a huge love affair with heels, and proper high ones. Being a little vertically challenged and simply for the love of shoes I have grinned through the pain on more occasions than I'd like to count, seen more blisters and plasters than I care to recall and tried every trick in the book to save my poor pinkies from pain. So,  now I can share the ones that work with you!

1. When buying your shoes avoid cheap hard plastic or rubber shoes. This is for 3 reasons. First of all they aren't breathable, meaning your feet will sweat more causing friction and therefore you guessed it, blisters. Second of all they will not soften meaning you cant stretch them out and lastly along with the sweat and friction the hard edges are likely to dig into your feet cutting them.

2. If the shoes hurt when you try them on in the shop, they will probably always hurt, so cut your losses and leave them behind.

3. If the shoes are a little tight or pinching at the toes a little stretching can really help. If you're anything like me you'll want to wear them straight away so you won't have time to break them in around the house for a week or so. Instead pop them on with a pair of socks and blast them with the hair dryer, this will soften them to help them stretch and mould to your feet.

4. Another quick and easy way to stretch your shoes is to fill freezer bags with water, put them in the shoes and put the shoes in the freezer over night. When water freezes it expands therefore stretching the shoes. this works great for any type of footwear.

5. If you are wearing your heels to work all day your feet will sweat and swell a little throughout the day. To help combat this and any blisters it might lead to keep talcom powder or spray deodorant in your handbag and apply it as needed throughout the day.

6. Gel insoles ladies. If you haven't become acquainted with them you are about to enter into a great friendship. They stick to the insoles of your shoes right where the ball of your foot sits. They are particularly great for shoes with no platform as they cushion the ball of your foot and also have a cooling effect to help ease any burning sensation you might get.

7. You might think I sound crazy but trust me you'll thank me for this one. To alleviate pain in the ball of your foot tape your third and fourth toes together, counting from your big toe. I've found that nude medical tape is best. The reason this works is that there is a nerve that splits between those two toes that causes pain when pressure is put on it. The tape removes the strain on the nerve, therefore it causes no pain.

8. Pop socks. I know they remind you of your granny but believe me granny knew what she was doing. They reduce the friction between your foot and the shoes which means less swelling, less sweating and less chance of blisters!

9. Whatever you do if your new shoes are killing your feet DON"T TAKE THEM OFF. I mean it, if your feet are sore the best thing you can do is smile through the pain. Taking your heels off may sound tempting and will give you relief for a brief time, but with all that swelling getting them back on is guaranteed to be twice as painful. If you really do find that you cant bear the pain, sit down and take the weight off for a while.

10. ALWAYS have a pair of stylish flats on hand. Keep them in your handbag, your locker or under your desk for those occasions that your feet really just can't take it anymore.

Five Top Tips on Buying Your Designer Wedding Dress for Less

Wedding dresses are crazily expensive - some surveys even suggest they count for 20% of some bride's wedding budgets. I really struggled to find a reasonable wedding gown that felt like 'the one', and in the end, my mum very kindly gave me my Delphine Manivet dress as a wedding present. It was worryingly expensive, and I spent months trying to find it second-hand, but at that time Delphine was a reasonably new designer...now she's stocked in Browns Brides! I managed to recoup some of the money by selling my gown to another bride, who visited me at home to try it on. I felt very sad to let it go, but it halved the overall price, and assuaged my guilt sightly. So in the spirit of saving money, and looking hot for less money, I thought I'd give you these top-tips for getting your wedding dress for less.

{Wedding Photographer Credit} Me on my French wedding day by Jemma Harding Photography}

♥ Find out whether your wedding dress designer does sample sales, and be the first in the door.

♥ Search on eBay. I know there are tonnes of Temperley London and Jenny Packham wedding dresses available, and most brides expect you to want to try before you buy. If your designer is French, search on French eBay {tip: you'll need to use the word 'robe' for dress or 'voile' for veil}. My wedding dress for my London wedding was designed by Australian dressmakers, Rose & Ruby, so I searched on Australian eBay.

♥  Check out wedding blogs that allow brides to list their wedding dresses. Once Wed is a US wedding blog with a great listings section, and Rock My Wedding in the UK also offers second-hand dresses.

♥ Scour the Secondhand Dress websites. My favourites are Sell My Wedding Dress and Preloved, but there are loads - just type "secondhand wedding dress" into Google.

♥ If all else fails, ask for a discount. You'll be surprised how often shops will offer 10%-20% off, and you've got nothing to lose by asking.

P.S. There is another option. Don't go designer! Tonnes of high street stores like Monsoon sell off-the-peg wedding dresses that look just as good as designer gowns. And if you don't tell...neither will I....

P.P.S. I have now sold both my wedding dresses!

How To Avoid Wedding Jet-Lag

Perhaps it's because I'm on holiday this week, but my thoughts have turned to honeymoons. My husband and I decided not to have one immediately after our wedding - our budget was bust, and we decided our money was better spent elsewhere {like champagne for our guests!}. And after all, a honeymoon is just a holiday, and we figured we could wait until we'd refilled our coffers. We couldn't have been more wrong. The feeling you get after your wedding is a unique combination of massive joy, extreme exhaustion, and huge deflation. It's like wedding jet-lag, and you need a honeymoon to avoid it. Just think, you've been planning your wedding for months, and now it's over. You need to get away, to get over the gap it leaves in your life! Obviously not all of us can afford to go on a tropical break, but even if it's a long weekend away, use your credit card, beg, borrow or steal...but book yourself a romantic break. And try to leave some money for new beachwear, or cheat and get married in your bikini - Pamela Anderson-style!

Five Ways to Fabulous Wedding Inspiration

Can I let you into a secret? When I started planning my wedding, I wasn't even engaged. In fact, it was about six months before my boyfriend asked me to marry him. I was so excited about the concept of planning a wedding - all the creative fun of it - that I had a secret file of ideas on my computer. That quickly turned into a less secret file when I started Before the Big Day wedding blog {three months before my engagement}, and by the time my boyfriend finally put a ring on it, I was stuffed to the brim with wedding ideas and inspiration. But what if you're not like me, and you're newly engaged, and you haven't got the slightest idea of where you're going to find your wedding mojo, and get inspired? Or, if you're more like me, and have too many ideas, and you're not sure which is really 'you'? Hopefully these five wedding tips will help you on your way, out of the wedding maze, and into the land of {almost} perfect wedding planning.

{Photo Credit} Ice-Cream Parlous Bistro Table & Chairs Set by The Atomic Attic

1. Find pictures that inspire you. They don't all have to be wedding pictures - for example this picture of two chairs and and a table got my creative juices flowing this morning. There's something about them that promises a future life together as a couple, sharing rose al fresco, and enjoying romantic trips to Parisian bistros. They'd start me thinking of a vintage French-themed wedding, maybe in the South of France, where you serve harvest-festival-style buffet tables of charcuterie, creamy cheeses and baguette. Your waiters could wear Breton-style t-shirts, and your wedding invitations could be reminiscent of bistro-style daily menus, with the table plan written in white ink on a vintage mirror. Wedding favours would be macarons, and you could have a photobooth stuffed to the brim with French-themed fancy dress; berets, strings of garlic, sophisticated moustaches and feather boas. Do you see what I mean? All that from just one picture!

2. Save the pictures that inspire you via Pinterest. If you haven't signed up yet, you really should! It's the best way to create mood boards for your different wedding ideas. My advice is to create one for every theme you're considering, and then one each for key extra items e.g. Favourite Wedding Dresses, Favourite Groom Looks, Bridesmaids Ideas. Take a look at my Pinterest boards to give you an idea. Once you've opened your Pinterest account, and added the Pin It function to your web browser, you can save every scrap of wedding inspiration in one place.

3. Have you discovered Etsy yet? It's a-mazing! Basically it's an online marketplace, where the most creative people in the world sell handmade or vintage items. It is chock-a-block packed with wedding ideas and inspiration, and I'd really recommend signing up for their weekly wedding emails, and reading the Etsy Wedding Blog. Folksy is another similar website which is quite a bit smaller, but more UK-based. I recently found these gorgeous botanical banners on Folksy, which completely inspired my friend's up-coming spring garden wedding.

4. Trawl the wedding blogs. I suppose I'm bound to think this, but honestly the wedding blogs are the best place for free wedding inspiration. Personally I recommend checking out the Real Weddings section of any wedding blog. That's where you can beg, borrow and steal other brides' wedding ideas, and keep up on all the latest wedding trends. My favourite UK wedding blogs include Rock My Wedding, Rock n' Roll Bride, Love My Dress and OMG I'm Getting Married.

{Photo Credit} Caught the Light - see more pictures of my wedding

5. Find wedding inspiration from your life as a couple
. Think back through your courtship, your first date, your first holiday together, where you got engaged, where you live, your hobbies, what you love doing together, eating together, watching on TV. Do you both love travel? Live in London? Love Chinese food? Did you both grow up in the countryside? Did you meet thanks to a shared love of music? All of these little details about the two of you as a pair, can grow into a big wedding inspiration idea. For example, on a trip to New York, a lady in a shop gave me a tiny vintage key. It happened to be one of the best days of our holiday, and the key always seemed a romantic talisman of that day. Two years later we celebrated our Secret Garden themed wedding, with a vintage key motif!

Before the Big Day Wedding Trends of 2013 - Origami

The first of the HUGE trends for 2013 is wedding origami. It's DIY, cheap and cheerful, and completely personalised, making it the perfect recession-beating wedding detail. And it's easy! With the help of YouTube videos and cheap squares of origami paper, I managed to create a very cute origami heart and origami duck yesterday. Check out my pictures on Pinterest. I'd recommend adding origami details to your wedding invitations and wedding favours, and you could even create an origami swan backdrop for your wedding vows. Plus, did you know that in Japan, a thousand paper cranes are traditionally given as a wedding gift by the father of the bride, to wish the happy couple a thousand years of happiness and prosperity? So romantic! Here are just a few wedding origami ideas - for tonnes more take a look at my Pinterest board.

Choosing Your Wedding Venue - 6 Questions to Ask

You're engaged! Congratulations! So where are you getting married? If you don't have an obvious venue, this can be the question that strikes fear into a bride's heart. If you're finding it really hard to choose where to celebrate your wedding day, don't worry, you're not alone. I have two newly engaged friends, who are right now tearing their hair out over where to get married. They're both very different - one couple are looking for the perfect field and farm, the others are on the search for the best London landmark, with Kew Gardens high on their list. The venue is key to the type of wedding you'll be having, and that's why it can be the hardest decision. Until you know your wedding style, it's hard to pick your wedding venue. And until you pick your wedding venue, it's hard to pick your wedding style. Argh!! But fear not, help is at hand thanks to Before the Big Day. Here are five questions to help you make a decision.

1. How many people do you want to invite?
2. Home or abroad?
3. Urban or countryside?
4. Decorated or empty?
5. Smart or casual?
6. Budget - big or small?

Or there is the Lucky 7th option....have two weddings like we did! One in France, and one in London. One large and one small. One expensive, one budget. One countryside, one urban. One inside, one outside. One casual, one elegant. The best of both worlds!

My Fabulous Fitness Weekend at Bootique

All this week I've been eating yoghurt for breakfast instead of cereal, and you know what, I feel a lot slimmer as a consequence. So why this sudden turn away from cornflakes? Well it's all thanks to the incredible weekend I spent at my friends' new project - Bootique in Majorca. Run by Alice and Angus {personal trainer and chef and engaged couple}, Bootique is a tailor-made holiday with at twist, where Alice trains you to within an inch of your life, and Angus feeds you healthy {but delicious} food. We went for a long weekend, and somehow managed about five hours of exercise a day without collapsing. In the gaps between Pilates classes, power-plate sessions and treks in the Majorcan hills, we relaxed around the gorgeous pool, sipping herbal tea and watching dragonflies dart around the tropical garden. Truly a heavenly experience, and one I can't recommend enough to brides-to-be for last-minute slimming or healthy hen weekends. And the best thing? It inspires you to be healthier at home - it's not just yoghurt I've started eating, I've even learnt how to cook quinoa.

Finding the One - Vintage Wedding Dresses

Finding 'the one' is the most important step in preparing your big day, and I'm not talking about your groom. Picking your dress could be the hardest decision you ever make - after all, how often are you going to let yourself spend that much money on one gown? The secret is to choose a style you like, and then personalise it with the help of a professional dressmaker. Here are two fantastic options to help you on your way. The first collection comes thanks to The Vintage Wedding Dress Company and the second from Clapham-based company Ellie & Charlotte. Both offer a selection of silhouettes which you can then adapt into a unique and personal gown, designed just for you!

My DIY Wedding Ceremony & Advice

Before I got engaged, I presumed that the type of couple that wrote their own wedding ceremony were either massive hippy-types, or hugely arrogant of their own writing skills and a bit sappy. As we're neither, I'm not sure how we ended up writing our French wedding ceremony. It was partly thanks to our friends {The Ducks}, who hosted their own fabulous Caribbean-themed wedding with their own inspiring ceremony, and partly because we don't believe in God. With a church wedding firmly off the cards, and the civil ceremony so depressingly meh, we weren't left with many options. I did buy the Humanist wedding ceremony guide, but deary me, that booklet knows how to take the romance out of vows. So we wrote threw caution to the wind, and using the Church of England ceremony as a template {minus God}, we came up with our own. And now you can read it, and hopefully see that it wasn't a naff sludge-fest, but actually quite meaningful and dead romantic {my Boy's terms}. Hopefully it should still act as a decent template, should you be looking for one! Click here to take a look. You'll notice from the gorgeous Caught the Light pictures below, that we said our vows in a churchy-looking place. We were very lucky that our venue had an unconsecrated chapel, so we had the beauty of an historic building, without the religious obligations.

{Photo Credit} Our wedding by Caught the Light

P.S.
Remember that to legally get married you have to either have a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony of some kind. We had our civil ceremony in London, so strictly speaking the French wedding didn't count. Although for us, it was our wedding day, and the 28th May is what's engraved in The Boy's wedding ring {mine is too narrow}.

How to Recycle Your Wedding Dress

This is the weekend when I say goodbye to my Delphine Manivet Anatole wedding dress. He's going to a good home - the lovely bride-to-be Kirsty has bought him from me for her Shoreditch wedding next month. It seemed like fate when she got in touch saying that she'd been searching for a second-hand Anatole, and then found mine, only 10 minutes away from her London home. It feels a bit sad to let him go, but in my view it's crazy to keep a wedding dress locked away in your cupboard for twenty years. Let's be honest, fashions change so much, it's really unlikely your daughter is going to want to wear it. And what if you have sons? You don't want to be the psycho mother-in-law who makes your son's fiancé wear your old dress. So much better to make some of the money back, and recycle your big day. What do you think? Are you in favour of selling your gown, or are you going to keep your wedding dress for posterity? If you're interested in recycling your wedding dress, take a look at my advice below.

{Photo Credit} Delphine Manivet Anatole wedding dress, worn by a model {not me!}

How to Recycle Your Wedding Dress

1. When you choose your wedding dress make sure you buy a well-known brand. It's lovely to have a dress made to your own design, but it's very hard to sell it afterwards.

2. Try to be careful with your dress on your wedding day. That doesn't mean you can't have fun, just lift up the skirts when you're walking on gravel, or through puddles!

3. A dress without a train is less likely to pick up stains, and will therefore be easier to sell on. That said, my dress had a train, and I still managed to sell it, despite having trod in someone's dropped canapé. The bride-to-be who bought my dress didn't want a train, so she's going to have it adjusted sans stains.

4. Take the dress off after your first dance. It's less likely to get wrecked in the dancing, and you're more likely to be a little tipsy later in the night, and that's when you might spill things down yourself. Also, it means you get to have two bites at the wedding outfit cherry! I changed into a bright pink dress, which was fantastic for dancing the night away.

5. Avoid red wine - for obvious reason!

6. Ask your mum to help you take the dress off at the end of the evening and hang it up for you.

7. Get it dry-cleaned as soon as you can. Stains can set in. I didn't send my dress away to a special dry-cleaner - I just sent it to my usual one. I reckon all the special places are a bit of a rip-off, unless your dress is massively intricate.

8. Wear really high heels. That means that even if you're short, the bride that buys your dress can cut off the dirty hem and have it raised a couple of centimetres.

9. Avoid drunk uncles holding canapes or glasses. Ditto for your 16-year old cousin, who's been allowed to drink champagne for the first time.

10. If you've got a dress to sell, then why not advertise it for free on the Before the Big Day Facebook page? All you have to do is click here, click Like, and then you can post a picture or a video, plus a description.

Hello and Welcome!

Exciting things are happening at Before the Big Day. We've had a huge influx of new readers and sponsors, and I want to welcome you newbies to our boutique wedding blog. As you know, Before the Big Day is here to inspire you with lots of fabulous real weddings and wedding theme ideas, to make your big day stand out from the crowd. But we're also really keen to start a bridal community, where you can talk to other brides about their latest obsession with pompoms, or giant balloons, or corsetry, or the agony of choosing your first dance. I've had so many brides come up to me and say things like, 'I can't stop thinking about the chair covers at my wedding, am I normal?'. The answer is YES, you are normal, even if your husband-to-be thinks you're mad, and your girlfriends glaze over with boredom. So my plan is to create a space where brides can stick together, and help each other out, and thanks to the wonderful world of Facebook, I now have a Before the Big Day Page. This is open to everyone - it's a place where you can post messages and pictures and advice, and share enthusiastic wedding obsessiveness. All you have to do is click here, and Like!

Your Wedding Flowers for Less

Wedding flowers can blow your budget. They certainly blew mine, and that's despite me knowing all the secret tips. Unfortunately most of my wedding tips didn't translate into French for my wedding, but if you're getting married in the UK, then this advice on wedding flowers is going to save you a fortune. If you're looking for super-high end designer flowers, then this is not the feature for you - but right now, most of us are trying to save a few pennies on our wedding budget, and I'm all about cheap and chic. To get you in the mood, here are a few pictures of my own wedding flowers, taken by the lovely Chloé from Caught the Light. We couldn't DIY all our wedding flowers, because we needed to hire the vases from the florist, and it worked out as more economical to keep him on-side. But we saved a fortune by buying clouds and clouds of baby's breath from a local market. Our wedding planner Kerry Bracken collected it on the night before the wedding and it stayed lovely and fresh. Our Provencal florist, Stéphane, was wonderful - I'd recommend him to any bride planning to get married in France.

Before the Big Day Tips - Your Wedding Flowers for Less

1. Keep it seasonal. For a list of what flowers are in season for your wedding, click here.

2. Consider using plants rather than cut flowers for your table displays. Some garden centres will rent you plants, but even if you need to buy them, you can give them away as lovely presents after your wedding. You could even grow your own plants, whereas growing enough flowers is a mammoth task.

3. Keep it simple. Single blooms in lots of vases take a lot less time to arrange, and that means the florist will charge you less for their time. This isn't going to give you a luxury look, but elegant simplicity is very in right now!

4. Choose a cheap variety of flower, and buy tonnes of it for a dramatic effect. For example, I used baby's breath - a flower I hate when mixed with roses, but adore on its own. Carnations have the same effect. They're dreadful dotted in bouquets, but when you mass loads of them together, the effect completely changes, from awful to awesome.

5. Buy direct from a flower market and ask a friendly florist to moonlight on your behalf. This probably only works if you have a friend or a friend-of-a-friend who's a florist, but it's worth asking around. They could do your wedding flowers instead of giving you a wedding present.

6. DIY. Now I say this with huge caution. If you're doing simple single blooms as suggested in Hint 3, then you're not going to find this too traumatic. If, however, you're thinking luxurious mixed and hand-tied bunches, then you're not going to be able to produce the effect you want. Plus it takes hours, and it has to be done really near the wedding. You do not want to be arranging flowers the morning of you wedding. Really, trust me, you don't.

7. Don't DIY your buttonholes. They're harder to produce than you think, and they're going to be in every photography. Ditto for your wedding bouquet. Even if your budget is tiny, splash out.

Engagement Rings Advice

It's surprising how many of my male friends say they don't want to get married because they're worried about the cost of an engagement ring. If only they knew that their girlfriend would be happy with a Hula Hoop, if only they'd propose! But there's no doubt that the boys do get the more expensive end of the deal, and many of them are nervous about going into jewellery shops, and getting laughed out the room because of their puny budget. Or course they don't need to worry, because engagement rings come in all shapes and sizes, and in all budgets. From solitaire diamond rings to multi-jewelled knuckle dusters, there's something out there for everyone. Here are a few of my hints and tips on how to buy wedding jewellery....leave this page open on your laptop, so they can 'accidentally' read it! Plus if you've got any advice, please do add it to the Comments section below.

1. Traditionally a wedding ring should cost two month's salary before tax. I've heard some US jewellers suggest it should be three months!! But there in the UK it's definitely supposed to be two.

2. Lots of little diamonds give a really dramatic effect, but don't cost nearly as much as solitaire diamonds.

3. Coloured stones are often a cheaper option, but remember that diamonds match everything, and your bride is going to want to wear her engagement ring every day of her life.

4. If the clarity isn't perfect, don't worry. If the flaw can't be seen by the naked eye, then who cares!

5. Why not buy a smaller solitaire diamond ring for your proposal, and promise to replace it with a bigger rock when you've saved up the money? Your bride will be thrilled to be engaged - she won't care about the size of the rock.

How to Buy Your Wedding Dress For Less

As soon as you get engaged, people are going to start asking you about your wedding dress. Have you found one yet? Do you know what style you're going to go for? Which is your favourite designer? I had no idea. In fact, I found the whole process just a little daunting. There's a certain amount of pressure to go with a group of girlfriends, and drink champagne, and enjoy that moment when they put the veil on, and everyone cries a bit. That wasn't ever going to work for me, because I like shopping on my own, and I was very conscious that all my girlfriends have busy lives, and I didn't want to be all bridezilla and insist they came with me shopping every Saturday. So I did a bit of shopping on my own, and quickly realised that I didn't like most dresses. I also found it hard to organise appointments, and I got a bit fed up having to travel all around London to go to all the shops. Why can't they all just be on one street? So it was a grumpy bride that stumbled out of the rain into Delphine Manivet. That's where I found my gorgeous gown, the Anatole. But man was it pricey! And that's why I loved this email from a Before the Big Day Reader, Annie.

Hi - Just stumbled on your blog, I absolutely love it! That's been the best part of wedding planning reading all of these amazing blogs! I was just wondering if your Delphine Manivet wedding dress was the Rapheal style and if you were thinking about selling it at all as I am trying to buy a second hand one as it is over my budget but completely to die for! Annie x

Annie and I totally think alike. I also searched for the Anatole second-hand as well, and I reckon lots of brides try to do the same. So in the spirit of saving money, and looking hot for less money, I thought I'd give you these top-tips for getting your wedding dress for less.

♥ Find out whether your wedding dress designer does sample sales, and be the first in the door.

♥ Search on eBay. If your designer is French, search on French eBay {tip: you'll need to use the word 'robe' for dress or 'voile' for veil}. My London wedding dress was designed by Rose & Ruby from Australia, so I searched on Australian eBay.

♥  Check out wedding blogs that allow brides to list their wedding dresses. Once Wed is a wedding blog in the US, and Rock My Wedding in the UK also has a listing service.

P.S. I actually did find a secondhand Delphine Manivet dress owned by a bride in Paris, but unfortunately she sold it before I managed to snap it up.

P.P.S. I have now sold both my wedding dresses!
