Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

One girl in her tub

The sun has decided to play a game of hide and seek with us here today, its just about peeking out intermittently between clouds so the generous summer climate of yesterday is gone, for now at least. Temperatures are set to rise again early next week and the suns going to grace us once again so why not take these duller days as an opportunity to prepare ourselves for its glorious return. Besides its the june bank holiday weekend and whether your a fake tan bronzed babe or an ethereal pale beauty we all need a good body scrub to have our skin looking its best. So heres my top, budget busting, body buffing solutions.

Up first is the humble, reliable exfoliating glove. We all have a pair of these lurking around the bathroom, and if you don’t you should have. They’re available from any pharmacy or supermarket for €1.99 a pair, so their purse friendly, however, i would recommend investing in a slightly more expensive, better quality pair like the body shop ones for example at €5.99 as they tend to hold their shape a lot better than the cheaper equivalent and the better the glove fits the better the scrub you get. They’re great you can scrub as much or as little as you like and you can use with your favorite shower gel, plus, they come in a rainbow of colours so they’ll buff your bits and brighten your day all at the same time.

Next on the list is Sugar Crush from Soap & Glory. I’m sure most of you have heard of its sister scrub Flake Away, but the mouth watering scent of Sugar Crush pips it to the post in my opinion. It is exactly what it says on the pot, a body scrub made of sugar, crushed brown sugar to be exact, with macadamia grains for even more scrubbing power, other ingredients include sweet lime and almond oil so this scrub really gets your taste buds tingling and gives you an instant pick me up, its tough on scaly dry skin too. Priced at €11 for a 300ml tub it won’t break the bank either.

Number three and possibly my favorite comes from Lush. The body butter bars from Lush scrub and buff as well as moisturise, use them on wet skin and rinse off for perfect smooth and glowing skin. You can pick from different fragrances and colours in these bars but my favorites are Buffy, which uses ground rice almonds and aduki beans as exfoliators and smells like a holiday on a Brazilian beach and Aqua Mirabilis which uses ground almond shells as an exfoliator and has subtle comforting scents of sandalwood and cocoa. The bars are great theres no packaging and no preservatives and also no waste, you can really feel them scrubbing at your scaly bits and the natural oils and butters in them leave your skin feeling soft and silky. With a price tag of just over €6 for a 90g bar its a steal!

Last but not least a real budget busting solution to flakes and scales straight from the kitchen press, this can be a little messy but it works and it wont cost you a penny because its already in your press. Its a simple little recipe, mix sugar and olive oil together in a bowl to your own desired consistency and start scrubbing. The sugar scrubs and buffs and the olive oil leaves your skin soft if a tad oily, rinse with or without soap et voila!! Budget Buffing at its best!!

There you have it, if any of you have some more favorites or home scrub recipes, please share. Happy scrubbing!!

Vail Family Photographer - Mother's Day Photo Shoot in Wildridge, Colorado.

Here are a few photos of Heather and her 3 sisters that we took last week as a special gift to their Mom for Mother's Day. They used to wear matching outfits as children when they had their portraits done, but they decided to coordinate with Tiffany Blue accents this time.  I love that it's not a common color to see in family portraits, and they did such a good job putting it all together.  Beaver Creek looks stunning in the background.  Can you believe we still have so much snow up here in the Vail Valley!

Sandalise

Summers Best Sandals

Summer has finally decided to grace us with its presence here on the emerald isle and what a pretty place it can be when the sun comes out the rain stops and the sky turns from grey to blue. Getting my legs out of their almost eternal hibernation and reintroducing them to the light of day is akin to a snake shedding its skin and is extremely liberating (and i’m sure slightly freakish for onlookers, my legs have become so white after endless months behind shrouds of denim and cotton mixes that they have a distinctive blue hue and reflect every ray of sunshine from them glowing like two strange, white beacons in the sun). The most gratifying part to a warm summers day for me is, however, casting the trainers to one side and dusting off the sandals. Theres nothing quite like feeling the air around your feet and between your toes. Don’t get me wrong I hate feet, they freak me out, i just love the feeling of freedom you get when you walk around barefoot. Prancing around barefoot on the concrete and tar mac outside and feeling the grass through my toes on the lawn may be great in the sanctuary of my home however pounding the pavements is a little more treacherous for the soles. On finding out today that i have lost the flop, thats the one for the right foot, of my old and reliable not to mention ridiculously comfy Abercrombie and Fitch brown leather braided flip flops, i loved those, i was forced to go shopping for replacements, so heres some of my picks from the best sandals around (flats of course i’m talking freedom, not pain)...

Don’t forget the nail polish, its amazing how shiny shades can distract from the freaky ugliness of feet, engineered genius and amazingly multifunctional they may be but pretty they are not. These sandals are though...

Amazing Rainbow Honeymoon Shoot

So I need to come clean - I've actually posted this honeymoon shoot before, but my newborn baby has decided to have a growth spurt this week, so I've had no chance to do any blogging! Instead I bet on the fact some of you lovely brides-to-be might not have spotted this fabulousness in Before the Big Day's archives. Combining a rainbow theme and hot air balloons, it's a dreamy concoction that ticks every one of my blogging boxes. Shot by Jose Villa, and style by Joy Thigpen, it's too perfect for words. Don't you wish you could be swept away in a hot air balloon the morning after your wedding? So romantic! P.S. Caped Crusaders

Simply Put, Coats as Capes

In case you haven’t noticed 2013 is quickly becoming the year of the shoulder drape. Trendsetters, celebrities, stylish ladies over land and sea and yes even you terribly trendy trouts have stopped “wearing” coats, in the traditional sense at least. Instead the cream of the crop have opted for propping them on their shoulders leaving sleeves obsolete and almost totally redundant as they hang, sway and slump, empty and unloved to the extremities of their perfectly proportioned ensembles.

This new way to wear your jacket is unquestionably chic and affords the effortless elegance reminiscent of Jackie O and Grace Kelly. How ever it is only efficacious if you walk around like a well trained irish dancer with a poker up your ass and your arms glued to your side. This nod to old school hollywood glamour does not come without tribulation. As your coat teeters precariously off your shoulders your devil may care style attitude may be compromised by a wide range of scenarios. First and foremost your reflexes, well, arm action in general... such a daring act as waving to a friend, hailing a taxi, fixing your hair, opening your front door could all result in a not so graceful de-coating of the shoulders. Also remember to walk at a slow even pace, running for the last bus will have the same unglamorous effect.

This look while very pretty and somewhat practical in this weather when it goes from warm and sunny, to cold, to raining, to sunny again all in the space of two hours is not an everyday look and should be worn after careful (meteorological) consideration. It is at all costs, to be avoided any day that greets you with a rebellious breeze, when on turning a corner your jacket may become airborne and drift away like a large ghost on said breeze, or, the more likely scenario, that it will be aggressively blown from your shoulders and thrown in a dirty puddle on the side of the street.

The shoulder draped coat can be worn in just about any combination imaginable and it even has the ability to transform a somewhat unkempt and grungy aesthetic into a more chic translation of the same style. However in my experience when it comes to arm candy, a clutch bag is definately the bag of choice if your trying to “not” wear your coat, as it is the least likely to disturb the perfect balance that is required.

So there you go ladies in the name of fashion and style, may you go unsleeved and duely warned.

Amazing Geometric Wedding Altar Backdrop

If you're not getting married in a church, but you want to walk up an aisle, then you might want to consider an altar-equivalent. There's a huge wedding trend for so-called 'backdrops' in the USA, and it's winging its way over the Atlantic to hit our shores this summer. Ribbons, bunting, flowers, paper chains, balloons, blackboards and vintage door-frames, they've all been used to create a focal point for the marriage ceremony, but the latest {and greatest} idea are these origami diamonds. Designed and handmade by French Knot Studios, they're fabulously neon, and the perfect addition to any contemporary themed wedding. Check out more wedding altar and backdrop ideas on my Pinterest page.

In A Land Not So Far Far Away...

And nowhere near a beach...

In other news today Mother Nature has obviously taken note of yesterdays blog entry and is treating us to another day of sunshine and blue skies, perhaps she has overcome the aforementioned heart ache and maybe theres even a new man in her life... a spanish matador per chance... None the less although the sun is gracing us with its presence it is still warmer in doors than out and as i brave the milder elements of this Irish summer day i’m armed with a light knit sweater and ready for whatever mother nature might deem to surprise us with, namely, that distinct cold breeze thats chills your bones when the sun gets engulfed by a passing cloud. How and ever, although I’m not alone in my choice of spring time armour i seem to be observing more and more scantily clad ladies who are daring to bear at the first sign of a sun ray, theres an array of short shorts, short dresses, tank tops, string tops, crop tops barely there tops... I mean come on ladies I may be a cold blooded creature but its definately not that warm, we live in Ireland not Miami!! An act of bravery i ask or just plain stupidity, your guess is as good as mine but i predict a long line at the doctors office Monday morning...

Flower Power

Best In Show

We all know that feeling we get on a morning like this morning when we wake up, roll out of bed and sleepy eyed, creased and a bit befuddled we groggily draw back the curtains to see that rare phenomenon that is a blue sky and, wait for it, the sun!!

On closer inspection it appears that yet again mother nature has pulled the wool over our eyes and what looks like the start of summer is just a little tease... After we’ve dived into our wardrobes and rescued the skirts, shorts, crop tops etc tags still attached, that we splurged on earlier this month hoping that it wasn’t in vein and summer would make an appearance, taken the razor to the forest that has taken over our legs and underarms we realise that instead of feeling the heat of the sun caress those legs and underarms theres a chilly breeze that all but goes straight through us just as it did when the sun was in hibernation. So do we choose to A) decide to go grab our wooly jumpers and socks and admit defeat or B) show mother nature what for and embrace the sunshine with some more practical but still summer friendly style.

So on the penultimate day of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and with the sun actually making a bit of an appearance albeit more of a cameo role, I decided it was time to get inspired with some floral fashion for the weekend. Bright floral prints scream summer and don’t have to be skimpy, which means we don’t have to freeze or look ridiculously inappropriately dressed until (if ever) the temperature rises.

So, here are my picks for the perfect and practical floral ensembles...

1. Yellow floral print ankle trousers by Zara, wear with converse for a casual look or closed toe heels for Friday night drinks

2. Flower and snakeskin print top by Preen

3. White knitted sweater with yellow floral print by Zara

4. White floral embroidered kimono by Topshop, perfect for layering on days like today but still keeping that summer feel

5. Pink rose print skirt by Dior, its the perfect length for chilly summer days and pairing it with a longsleeved top will keep practical and feminine

6. Rose and lace shift dress by Dolce and Gabbana, the longer sleeve and knee length hem of the skirt will keep the breeze at bay and still look summery and sexy

7. Floral print novel clutch bag, ASOS

8. Floral resin belt by Dolce and Gabbana

9. Floral headband by johnny loves rosie at ASOS

Fashionista's 1- Mother Nature 0!! I hope that helps you all start to feel like its summer!! Happy weekend!!
