Satin, Velvet And Sex Appeal

The Golden Globes best dressed men.

When it comes to awards season who actually wins the awards is really only second to who wore what! I know that I speculate as much about who is going to be on the best and worst dressed lists as I do about whose going to win which awards. In college I used to love the day after the ceremonies when we would all sit around the pattern drafting table procrastinating and disecting every sartorial choice in post-mortem like detail. Well college is long since past and for years I've been doing it alone, aside from the times I was working on set which made it all more fun because some of us had worked with some of them at some point and there were great stories to be told and shared... But, this year I am going to perform my ritual with you through this keyboard and with a large cup of joe.

Without further ado, lets get this show on the road! Uncharacteristically I am going to start with the men. Menswear is a huge obsession with me, I love it! I'm crazy about tailoring, suiting fabrics and quirky details and have been known to channel it myself on more than one occasion. It is no surprise and no secret that Hollywoods leading men, like most men, look great in a well cut suit, take for example Channing Tatem in Gucci (his wife Jenna Dewan looks stunning in a Roberto Cavalli gown) and Leonardo DiCaprio in Armani both handsome, daper and very well turned out.

But, for me its all about something a little different than the classic black tuxedo or suit, something that shows a little thought and effort and provokes some sort of a reaction. So my top 5 best dressed men from last night in no particular order, as they say on Strictly, are...

Jared Leto in Saint Laurent. Leto picked up the award for best supposrting actor in... a black tux I hear you say, Oh Contrare! Notice the satin panel down the outside of the pants leg, the uber-shiny patent shoes and the tassled silk scarf, its these simple details that make this suit stand out as a more elegant and definitely daper choice. I also love the fact that Jared tied his hair into a messy bun for the event... double thumbs up.

Usher in Calvin Klien. This oxblood suit with black shirt and accents look striking on Usher and I love that he topped it off with a little bling!

Kevin Spacey in Burberry. This black velvet suit with satin lapels is typical of Spaceys red carpet style. He was also one of very few men who opted for a tie over a dickie bow for the event and the silver tie pin sets it off perfectly.

Matthew Mc Conaughey and wife Camila Alves both in Dolce and Gabanna. McConaughey won Best Actor in a Drama for Dallas Buyers Club and he picked up his award in style in this black tuxedo with green velvet jacket and waistcoat with black satin accents.

Chris Hemsworth in Dolce and Gabanna and wife Elsa Pataky in Paule Ka. Chris Hemsworth's tuxedo, like the man himself, is about as close to perfection as you can get in my eyes. The pants had a classic satin panel down the outside leg, the waistcoat was a snug fit and had subtle satin buttons and a pocket watch chain (which you can't see here) from the second button to the pocket. The tiny black buttons pick out the white shirt perfectly and as for the jacket! The jacket, navy velvet with black satin jacquard lapels, finished off with a small satin dickie bow and that winning smile. Okay, so forget the aforementioned in no particular order business. Chris Hemsworth wins the mens best dressed hands down.

So, the synopsis for the menswear is that velvet and couloured tuxedo's were the top trends of the night and Dolce & Gabanna were the red carpet champions! Tell me who was your best dressed man of the night?
