An Amazing American Mom

Part 2 of my Fashion Festival dramas...

So after my first ordeal with the crazy old lady my day definitely got better, I caught all the street shows, hopped on the beauty bus and got through to the final of the Stylathon!! After the Stylathon I had a few hours to kill before the Fashion Show at the Powerscourt and I wasn’t even sure if I’d hang about for it so I headed for Starbucks for a giant soy latte and a comfy couch to help me make up my mind...

The girl at the till was asking the group in front of me about the festival and if they knew what was on the following day so I started rooting through my bags because I knew I had an extra brochure but I had no luck finding it. Anyway, I got to the till placed my order and was absolutely horrified to look in my bag and realise my purse was gone! I was panicking and scouring my bag for my purse, which was obviously not there, when this hand reached over me with a card, the woman it belonged to then said in a lovely American drawl “Have you lost your purse, here I’ll get that for you”. Can you believe it!! I was so grateful but so embarrassed! I kept frantically searching all my bags and was so relieved when I noticed that like the idiot that I am I had had my purse under my arm all the time, I had obviously taken it out when looking for the brochure. At this stage this unbelievable woman had already paid for my coffee but thankfully not her own so I could reciprocate and buy her hers, the funny thing was that she was very annoyed in case her order cost more than mine, I couldn’t have cared less after what she had done for me! They both turned out to be the same price anyway and i got talking to her a little when we were waiting on our order, she was from Chicago, the home of Starbucks she told me, and was in Dublin on her own for a few days, her daughter was flying in the following day to join her and they were heading west. She got her coffee to go so I wished her a great holiday and thanked her a million more times.

I sat down and almost immediately spotted the second brochure I had and gave it to the girl behind the counter. I sat back sipped on my coffee and reflected on my day and I decided that that was a great note to end the day on, so I skipped the show and caught the bus home.

This woman genuinely blew me away with her generosity, she didn’t even hesitate she saw I was in a dilemma and was there to help a complete stranger. I was shell shocked at how kind she was, I know you might say that it was only a coffee but there was nothing in it for her and she didn’t care she was just helping out someone in a tight spot and more than happy to do it. I can be almost certain that if that was an Irish person behind me, myself included, they would have turned a deaf ear and blind eye and just waited to give their order possibly even moaning about how long I was taking with all my fidgeting. I think we can all take a leaf out of this lady’s book, thank you for inspiring me to be kinder you amazing American mom.
