Katy Perry Roars at SuperBowl XLIX

So SuperBowl XLIX or SuperBowl 49 for those of us not versed in fancy roman numerals was on last night. Reigning champions and Mr Gisele Bundchen's team The Patriots took the win again. But what made me staying up way way way past my bedtime even more worth it was the legendary half time show. This year Katy Perry literally roared down the house along with Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott.

The amazing spectacle was created by Irish man Baz Halpin and included a giant walking lion, dancing sharks, amazing light and fireworks displays and Katy Perry levitating and flying over the crowds on a shooting star!

The show also had 4 costume changes, which is pretty phenomenal for such a huge 12 minute production. Katy Perry literally had nano seconds to change between some of her looks! Perry's favourite designer and good friend Jeremy Scott designed all of her looks for the performance. Moschino's creative director shared all of his sketches for the halftime show with Elle.

He told them that Perry was actually wearing her second look under her first and that the one that kept him up at night was her over sized sweater dress that she wore for her performance with Missy Elliot. Apparently the black sweater dress with 49 embellished on it for the 49th SuperBowl kept getting caught on Katy Perry's hips during rehearsals, refusing to come down.

Scott told Elle that some of the sequins on her star dress were bigger than your hand. Perry also had costume rehearsals simply to time getting in and out of her costumes to make sure there were no mishaps during the performance.

So tell me what did you think of Katy Perry's SuperBowl halftime show? Did it make you ROAR??

Vail Family Photographer - 10 Tips for Family Photo Sessions

A very belated happy new year to everyone!  For my first post for 2015, I wanted to talk a bit about family photo sessions.  Last year, I took some time away from weddings and focused heavily on family and children's photography.  Being that I have 2 small children, it seemed fitting to focus on families that were in a similar phase of life as me.  HOWEVER...I still hadn't truly put myself in their shoes, and let me tell you...it was a little different than being on the other side of the camera.

My family decided to do our first ever photo shoot at the end of the fall, courtesy of a dear friend of ours who is a master Videographer.  The poor chap is more used to filming extreme skiing and face melting concerts, so our rambunctious children were an oddity for him.  I must say that he handled everything extremely well, considering!  Thanks Satchele :)

The first thing I did after our shoot was compile a quick list of tips.  These were the first things that popped into my mind as we were walking back to the car, and I hope they help some of you out with your future sessions.

1 - Clothing choices

There are tons of ideas for clothing color choices online.  Pinterest in particular has lots of ideas if you search for 'Family Portrait Clothing Colors'.  The combinations you'll find online will generally be based around 3 colors - 2 neutral and 1 accent color.  The combination we went with was navy, grey and white.  This is a pretty classic combination, especially in the fall, for one simple reason.  The leaves are already bright green and bright yellow, so you want a pretty neutral base when you're up against such colorful backdrops.  Secondly, we had all of our clothes already.  I would urge families not to go out and spend a lot of money on clothes unless you need to.  If we're shooting in the winter though, it's game on.  What could be more idyllic for some fun, crazy colors than a totally white, snowy background!

2 - Food and snacks

Snacks are key for little ones.  Try to give them something to eat before hand, to help ensure they're in a cooperative mood.  Bring some snacks with you, but try to offer them only when they're needed.  Small foods definitely work best during a shoot, like crackers or raisins.  You don't want to offer your child something that's going to take a long time to eat, like an apple or even a granola bar.  You're paying for a 1 hour session.  Don't waste 30 minutes of that time eating! Also, save the really sugary snacks as a nice reward for after the session.

Anyone with children will tell you that life works a lot easier if you have a dinner plan ready to go.  Children will be so spent after their session, and you'll probably be a little exhausted too.  A lot of my clients like to go out for dinner after a shoot because everyone's dressed up and looking their best.  Make sure you have a reservation, so that the kids aren't losing their minds.  If you're going home, grab take out or have dinner ready in advance so that everyone can just relax.

3 - Incorporate something that's important to your family into your session.

Every family has a little something that makes them unique.  Take some time to think about what is important to your family.  If you're able to bring some props along, please do!!  I love adding things to sessions that really help to make your images unique to your family.  Cars, horses, fashion, sports teams, dancing.  Whatever you can think of, I'll attempt to capture it and I'm always open to any suggestions!  My family is a little crazy about music.  Russ and I are both self-proclaimed music dorks, so it's just natural that our kids like nothing more than rocking out.  Bringing a ukulele and a xylophone to our session seemed like a natural fit!

5 - Let it Go!

Don't panic if your kids don't feel like cooperating!!!  I can't stress this enough.  Try to put yourself in their shoes for a second.  They've been put in a fancy little outfit that's uncomfortable.  They've been told to be on their best behavior and they have no idea why.  They're in new surroundings that they're unfamiliar with and to top it off, there's a strange lady sticking a camera in their face.

It's ok!

If your child is a little introverted, don't get mad at them.  This can have a real snowball effect, so take a deep breath and wait a few minutes.

A good photographer should be able to form a quick bond with your kids and instill some kind of trust in them.  A good photographer should also have a bag of tricks for dealing with not so happy children.  Zoom lenses work great for capturing candid photos when they think no one is watching.  I find that showing the kids some photos of themselves on my camera really helps too.  When all else fails, I have no shame in dancing around like a clown to get a kid to laugh.

On another note, don't forget about how funny some of the outtakes can be for posterity.  Take a look at the photo above.  It's obviously not one to frame, but I love that Maxwell's ripped off his bow tie and he's giving me 'that' look.  He's not going to be 3 forever and if it makes me smile now, it'll be sure to make me laugh in years to come.

6 - Sometimes it's ok to offer a bribe...

I know a lot of parents that are trying to get away from bribes (myself included), but it seems that a photo shoot might be that one time for an exception.  With little ones, I've seen everything from time on the iPad, Goldfish crackers or pizza used as motive to get through a shoot.  If you've got a toddler that loves cupcakes, don't be afraid to let them know there's a special treat waiting for them after their photos are done.  Lastly, don't forget about your significant other.  I knew that Russ didn't really want to do a photo shoot, but he was gracious enough to put a smile on his face and humor me by cooperating.  In return, I brought a few craft beers for him and Satchele (our kind photographer) to drink once we were done as a way of saying thank you.

7 - If you have a shot list, please bring it!

I had brunch with a group of girlfriends recently and we were all sharing stories about our experiences with photographers.  So many of the girls had nightmare stories of things that had gone wrong and a lot of them inevitably ended up with photos they weren't happy with.

As a photographer, I have a certain style with my photos.  This is what differentiates my photos from someone else's and it's usually what draws a client to my work.  I have a certain way that I'm going to run a session, if I'm not given any other suggestions.  However, we photographers are not mind readers.  If you have something in mind that you want from your session, please tell me!  A lot of clients will email me photos in advance with ideas or styles that they're looking for.  This is such a great help and if you think of something during the shoot, please speak up!  I only have 2 eyes and my own ideas.  If you think of something that you'd like, let's try it!

8 - If you want a great shot of your kids, stand directly behind the photographer

It can be hard to get children to look directly at the camera.  If I'm shooting photos of just the children, it really helps to have the parents stand directly behind me.  Parents can jump around, make silly faces or make bunny ears behind my head!  All of these things will help even the most timid child look directly into the camera for a stunning photo.

9 - Get some photos of just Mom and Dad

Obviously, once the family photos are done, everyone always wants awesome photos of just their kids.  After I've captured a ton of photos of the little ones, I always throw out the suggestion of getting some with just the parents.  Not surprisingly, most couples are caught off guard at the suggestion.  Clients constantly say "We haven't done this since our wedding".  When it comes time for clients to proof their photos and choose their images, they will inevitably choose one of these shots in their photo package.

10 - Enjoy your session!

I'm aware that this sounds like a fluffy, if not redundant, point to make.  There is more to this statement though.  Like any other family, Russ and I are running a pretty hectic household. Harrison is like any other 1 year old that's busy just trying to figure out how the world works.  Maxwell goes to 2 different schools and is constantly skiing, swimming or riding his bike.  Russ travels all over the country for work on a regular basis and when he's home, he can work some crazy hours.  On top of that, it's not uncommon for him to walk in the door while I'm running out the door to go to a shoot. The point is, we're constantly running in different directions.  During our photo shoot, it was a chance for our family to turn off all our phones and computers and just be with each other, running around in the woods and having fun together.  During your shoot, make sure you take the time, to take a step back and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and more than anything, the precious time you get to spend with your family!

My 600 Calorie Clean 9 Food Plan

If any of you have done the Clean 9 diet or are thinking of doing it, you'll know that the thought of living on 600 calories per day for a week can be very off putting, so I thought I'd share my 600 calories Clean 9 meal plan with you. On the detox you have 2 shakes per day as well as your 600 calories so it actually adds up to 1200 calories per day. Its advised in the plan to have your 600 calories in one evening meal however I was spending a lot of time at home and I'm a big snacker so I broke mine into several small snacks throughout the day.

One of my main goals form the detox was to kick my sugar habit so to stop me from cracking I got some natural, healthy substitutes to my jellies, chocolate and biscuits. I discovered Natasha's Raw & Living Foods. The whole range is available in all good health food shops, I love their Kale Crunchies in spicy tomato and their Cacao & Coconut slice. They are full of natural goodness and pack a real flavor punch but they are high in calories so be very careful with portion sizes. They are pretty expensive but with roughly 9 portions in the Cacao and Coconut slice they go a long way. They are sweetened with agave syrup so it meant I was getting something sweet and chocolaty without the sugar. My other go to snack for something a little sweet and filling are an old favourite of mine, Bounce energy balls. I discovered their protein balls years ago. They have loads of different flavors, I love the coconut and macadamia, cacao and mint and the apple cinnamon flavors. They are sweetened with agave syrup, they are gluten free and have roughly 9g of protein depending on the flavor. They have roughly 175 calories per bar once again depending on the flavor so they account for a third of your 600 calories but they do fill you up.

I would generally break up my 600 calories into 3 or 4 snacks making sure that my last snack had no starchy carbs. Here are a few samples of my daily food plans.

Day 1
1 banana and 1 slice of wheaten bread 240cal
1 bowl of homemade vegetable soup 140cal
1 small tin of tuna in brine and 2 unsalted rice cakes 108cal
20g Kale Crunchies approx 100cal
2-4 litres of water

Day 2
1 large bowl of homemade vegetable soup 200cal
20g Kale Crunchies 100cal
1 small tin of tuna in brine and 2 unsalted rice cakes 108cal
1 portion of Cocao and Coconut slice and 4 small Brazil nuts 150cal
2-4 litres water

Day 3
20g kale crunchies 100cal
4 Brazil nuts 100cal
1 half butternut squash tortilla 300cal
1 portion Cocao and Coconut slice 90cal
2-4 litres water

Day 4
1 bowl homemade vegetable soup 140cal
1 half butternut squash tortilla 300cal
20g Kale Crunchies and 3 small Brazil nuts 160cal
2-4 litres water

Day 5
baby potatoes, tuna, spring onion and mayonnaise 300cal
1 unsalted rice cake and 1 poached egg 225cal
1 Bounce protein ball 175cal
2-4 litres water

Day 6
1 half butternut squash tortilla 300cal
1 small tin tuna in brine and 2 unsalted rice cakes 108cal
1 homemade turkey burger 144cal
200g broccoli 56cal
2-4 litres water

Day 7
1 half butternut squash tortilla 300cal
1 homemade turkey burger 144cal
200g broccoli 56cal
1 large piece Cocao and Coconut slice 100cal
2-4 litres water

So there's my 600cal daily food plan for the Clean 9 diet. Are you surprised with how much food you can have for 600calories? Would you like the recipes I used? Have you ever heard of Natasha's raw & living foods or Bounce energy balls? Let me know in the comments below!

How I Got On With The Forever Living Clean 9 Detox

A while back I decided I wanted to try a detox. I'd never tried one before so here's how I got with the Forever Living Clean 9 Detox. It might help you with what to expect if your thinking of giving it a go.

I started using the Forever Living Aloe Vera Gel a few months back, I heard it was very popular in Brazil and figured if it was good enough for those gorgeous Latina's then it was definitely good enough for me! After all I have taken quite the shine to their men!

I couldn’t get over the results I was getting, I noticed it mostly in my nails which would be thin and weak and forever bending, peeling and breaking, after a few weeks they had grown longer than ever and were so much stronger, they would no longer bend or peel. In fact they stopped breaking altogether. So I decided to take it a step further and try the Clean 9 detox.

My reasons for trying the detox was that I really needed a kick start into a healthier lifestyle. I was practically living on sugar, biscuits, sweets, chocolate. I would have them for my breakfast dinner and tea, seriously if I had vegetables once a week it was an achievement and I don’t really eat meat so my diet was simple sugars and carbs. I was also drinking about 10 cups of coffee a day and my energy levels were at an all time low so I to make some drastic changes.

The program is a 9 day detox using Forever Living products. In the box you get 3 x 1 litre bottles of Aloe Vera Gel, 1 tub of Forever Lite Ultra with Aminotein which is basically a protein shake in vanilla or chocolate flavor, 70 forever Garcenia Plus softgels, 100 Forever Bee Pollen tablets, a shaker, a measuring tape and a measuring cup.

On days 1 and 2 you don’t eat, you have one shake per day and take your Aloe Vera Gel and tablets as laid out in the plan. On the first day i was very lethargic, I actually took a nap in the afternoon and I was suffering from severe caffeine headaches and sugar cravings. Its very important to keep hydrated so i drank roughly 4 litres of water per day. By day 2 my energy levels were on the rise but the headaches were killing me so I took another afternoon nap. On the evening of the second day I cracked a little, I just wanted to chew something, I know that might sound weird but sticking to a purely liquid diet is really tough, I chewed my Pollen tablets instead of swallowing them whole and I also had a few sticks of celery purely to feel like I was eating something.

From day 3 to 9 on the detox you have a 600 calorie meal in the evening, your Aloe Vera gel, tablets and shakes are still taken throughout the day. I was spending a lot of time at home over the detox and temptation was everywhere so I spread my 600 calories throughout the day. On day 3 my tiredness had gone and my energy levels were noticeably on the rise. By day 4 my caffeine headaches and sugar cravings were gone. I found the second part of the program relatively easy, for some reason on day 7 I was very hungry so I just kept myself busy, drank more water and went to bed very early. I found the whole program great. I got what I wanted out of it, I didn't drink coffee at all over the 9 days and most days now I only have one or 2 cups, my sugar cravings are practically gone and I eat real food now, lots of veg and protein so my eating habits have totally changed. My scales were broke so I cant tell you what weight I lost but I did loose an inch off my waist and hips and a half inch off my bust and thighs which was a welcome extra bonus!

Some people get put off by the 600 calorie restriction on the last 7 days of the detox, however you do have 2 shakes per day as well which is a total of roughly 1200 calories per day, which is pretty decent. You'd also be surprised how much you can eat for 600 calories. As I said I didn't have one meal I broke them up during the day to curb any temptation I was having. I was also finding it hard to deal with the caffeine and sugar withdrawal so I cut out caffeine altogether and got some natural vegan cacao treats to help with my sugar cravings.

Drop back tomorrow and I'll share the products I found to help kick my sugar habit. I'll share my meal plans and recipes I used to get the most out of my 600 calories.

Comment below and let me know if you've tried this detox or any of the Forever Living products and how you got on with them.
