Real Before the Big Day Bride: Katie & Michael - Reception Details

Time for the wedding reception details! With inspiration from wedding blogs like Before the Big Day, Katie and Michael spent two years preparing their wedding, so you can be sure of some stunning details. My favourites? I've fallen for Katie's incredible David Tutera for Mon Cheri wedding gown, her hand-tied peony and rose bouquet, and her bold bridesmaids' dresses. Nothing like a shot of pink to brighten up a big day! Other fav-picks include the elegant going away car {a Rolls Royce?}, and the super-cute personalised cake topper made by Artlocke Designs. I love how all the wedding details reflect the lace and pearl theme, it creates a really elegant effect you normally only get from a professionally planned wedding. Gorgeous wedding pictures published with thanks to Andrew Billington - don't miss more of his work on his website.

When we were looking around for wedding venues we wanted somewhere with a wow factor, and Waterton Park Hotel fitted the bill. We needed somewhere that would accommodate all 80 of our guests, and have a nice big room with the dance floor in the middle, and plenty of space for all of our DIY ideas. We wanted the decoration to be light and bright to reflect our summery wedding.

Our wedding photographer, Andrew Billington was also a recommendation - I think it's the best way to find a photographer because there are so many out there, which is a bit daunting at first.

As soon we saw Andrew's work and met him, we knew he was the photographer for us. His style of reportage was exactly what we wanted - our day captured not through posed shots, but as it happens and unfolds. We had so many comments from guests about how professional and friendly he was - most didn't even notice he was taking pictures! Nothing was too much trouble.

To say we enjoyed planning our wedding would be an understatement! We had Waterton Park booked just over two years before our big day, so that we could get a Saturday in peak season, so we had lots of time to look around, research and decide on what we wanted and what we were going to DIY. I spent many hours with bridesmaids sticking things into my wedding ideas book, reading blogs and pinning things on to my Pinterest account for inspiration. I’m going to miss it a lot and would do it all again tomorrow without a doubt.

We decided from the beginning of the planning stage that we would like to make our own wedding stationery, including the table plan, place markers and wedding favours. We searched for ideas, and then put our own spin on it, with our colours and theme.

We did a lot of DIY wedding projects, which though did get stressful at times {all that stationary!}, it was great to haves projects to do together. We created a photo booth for a bargain, as I found lots of free printables for the props {moustaches, glasses etc,}, and taped them onto cocktails sticks and bought inflatable guitars, etc for £1 each. We used our photographer's back drop and made instructions for how to use our camera, and the photos came out really well. People seemed to have a blast!

We also gathered our parents, aunties/uncles and grandparents wedding photos and did a small display on the back of our table plan which gave our guests opportunity to reminisce and see how weddings have changed through generations.

I found our cake lady, Carrie at Couture Cake Designs on Facebook through another cake lady’s page I met at a wedding fayre (woops!). When I showed Michael we were both blown away by her work, the amazing detail of icing roses were astonishing. We decided on a four-tier round cake and incorporated our lace and pink theme with ribbon-wraps. We obviously had to have the icing roses and hydrangeas {which matched our flowers}, and these were scattered down the front. Our separate cutting cake was for our cute personalised cake topper made by Cheryl at Artlocke Designs which went down a storm and became a top feature of the day.

We picked vanilla sponge with strawberry conserve {a lovely traditional flavour], lemon, coconut with raspberry conserve {which even converted Michael as he doesn’t normally like coconut}, and a chocolate mud cake as the top tier for the chocoholics. The cutting cake was fruit. I think we covered most people’s taste and favourite flavours!

My advice for brides? I know everybody says it, but honestly the day goes so fast it's important to stand back, and take everything in. We did an informal receiving line out of the church which gave us the opportunity to speak to all our guests, and we also made sure we went around the tables after our wedding breakfast. Also, do your research and take pictures with you to suppliers as this gives them an exact idea of what you want, without you having to explain in great detail - after all - what you see in your mind might be totally different to what they imagine. This especially helped me at the florists and with my hair and make up lady, Victoria Farr. In the last week don't stress about the smaller details, and enjoy the build-up with family and friends. One of my favourite parts of our wedding was our church rehearsal and a BBQ afterwards with our wedding party.

Real Before the Big Day Bride: Katie & Michael

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's nothing I like more than a Before the Big Day bride! Lovely Katie read Before the Big Day on a regular basis and even signed up for our newsletter as she prepared for her wedding, so it's so exciting for me to feature her gorgeous wedding pictures. A girl after my own heart, she researched her wedding on Pinterest, Etsy and of course Before the Big Day.   As a couple, Katie and Michael DIY'd tonnes of their wedding details, including all the stationery, from Save the Dates, table numbers, the table plan, and a fabulous photo booth. Katie's wedding theme gradually developed once she'd bought her wedding gown - a gorgeous lacy dress by David Tutera for Mon Cheri. This led to lots of lace and pearl wedding details, teamed with a deep raspberry pink and ivory colour palette. Tonnes more wedding details to come in the reception post later today, in the meantime enjoy these gorgeous wedding pictures by Andrew Billington.

We got married on the 22nd June 2013 at St Michael’s Church in East Ardsley and hosted our reception at the stunning Waterton Park Hotel in Walton, Wakefield.

My wedding dress 'Jolie' came from Broughtons Bridals in Garforth and the designer was David Tutera for Mon Cheri. I started by trying on a few dresses that I liked, and then the owner, Sam, picked out the dress she thought would suit my height and shape best, and I just fell in love. I thought I wanted a princess style dress, but they just didn't suit me, because I'm tall. Also I love lace so my dress was the perfect combination of both, with delicate lace detailing and a big skirt. I also customised the dress by removing ribbon and adding the belt. so it was definitely one of a kind!

My shoes were Touch Ups by Benjamin Walk. I am 2 inches smaller than Michael so only wanted a small 1 inch heel with peep toes, which I found really difficult to find - there isn’t much out there for taller girls. Eventually I found my shoes online and added pretty pearl shoes clips for some detail, and what a great choice they were, as they were comfy all day!

My veil was from Margaret Roberts who comes highly recommended by lots of brides in the online wedding community. She made my stunning, two-tier, cathedral-length veil with scattered crystals for an amazing price. My tiara was by Glitzy Secrets, which combined the pearl detail I loved, with subtle diamantes which fitted perfectly with my dress.

I let my bridesmaids decide between themselves what they wanted, and after I few trying-on sessions in different shops, they decided on Dessy full-length, one-shouldered dresses. The colour was 'Tutti Fruitti', which was exactly the shade I imagined as my raspberry pink. This type of dress suited all three of them, and they looked so beautiful, and felt comfortable all day with the one strap.

I eventually persuaded Michael to go with my colour palette of deep raspberry pink, lightened with ivory, to keep it fresh and summery, a principle we'd wanted from the start of our wedding planning. Our theme developed into lace and pearls after I chose my lace dress, and we decided to incorporate it throughout the day. This started with our DIY wedding stationery, and included lace-trimmed place-markers and favour boxes, and strings of pearls falling from candelabras.

Michael also chose his, and his ushers suits from Broughtons Bridals' menswear section which stocks Peter Posh suits. We chose navy blue tails, which we thought looked great with raspberry pink, and they were lightweight enough for {we hoped} a warm, sunny day.

We decided from the beginning of the planning stage that we would like to make our own wedding stationery. I took lots of inspiration from Pinterest, Etsy, wedding blogs and websites, and eventually we found a pocket-fold design we both loved. We then put our own spin on it, with our colours and theme. We included an RSVP card, accommodation details, and additional information for our guests.

Our wedding florist was Sofia at Ivy Florists in Pudsey. We found her thanks to a recommendation, and from the very first consultation we knew we could trust her to capture our ideas.

Sofia immediately put us at ease. I took my mood board to show the style I wanted, and Sofia created the perfect rustic, hand-tied bouquets for me and my bridesmaids. We chose my favourite peonies and roses as our main flowers - luckily June was the perfect month for these. Working with Sofia, we knew exactly what was going in each bouquet, buttonhole, top table piece, etc. They looked absolutely stunning.

Pretty Flower Crowns For Your Bridesmaids

If you're a regular reader of Before the Big Day, you'll know that nothing gets me more excited than a good flower crown. That, and bunting. I'm very big on bunting as well! So I hope you won't mind me featuring a selection of particularly pretty pictures of gorgeous headdresses by Rosie of Vintage Posie. The shots were taken by her friend and wedding photographer Kathryn Hopkins, and I'm sure you'll agree they look stunning! I love the wallpaper in the background as well - wouldn't that look great as the backing to your wedding invitations? Lovely wedding inspiration all round!

Vail Newborn Photographer - Pardon the Interruption...

It's been several weeks since my last post, but life is slowly returning to (a new kind of) normal.  My newest photography assistant, Baby Harrison, arrived in June and he has been an amazingly mellow and sweet new addition to our family.  Here's a little picture of him enjoying his sheepskin rug from New Zealand.

He was 8 days old when this photo was taken, and it's a good reminder that newborn sessions should be booked before a bambino makes their entrance into the world.  Friends and family can purchase gift certificates as a baby shower gift and then the new parents don't have to worry about anything but loving on their new baby.  The cute baby photos that are so popular right now are usually taken within the first 10 days because babies are so sleepy at that age and they're much easier to pose.

On a completely different note, the company that I run my website through has just unveiled some exciting new changes and I have to upgrade my website.  The new designs are gorgeous, but I have to sit through webinars and tutorials, so bare with me while I figure it out.  The blog and my logo are all getting an upgrade too, so there are exciting new changes ahead.  I just have to find the time to learn all of this new software!

I had decided to take a month off when Harrison was born, but my lovely Mum was here from New Zealand to help me out, so it was hard to pass up any opportunities. I found myself going out on my first shoot when Harrison was 2 weeks old, so that will be my next blog post.

I'm off to tend to a crying a baby now!

Will You Wear a Wedding Garter?

When it comes to wedding planning, there'll always be something important you forget. With me, it was my bridal underwear. Every other detail was perfect - I'd sewn a silver key onto my wedding bouquet, my napkins were tied with a special ribbon, and I'd sourced giant white balloons, but I had no knickers to wear under my wedding dress. Well, obviously I had knickers, but no special knickers! I've always slightly regretted it, along with not wearing a garter - your wedding day is pretty much the only time you'll ever wear a garter, and now I've missed out! So tell me, are you going to buy special lingerie for your big day? What sort of style will you go for? Pretty, sexy or fun? P.S. Don't you just love this funny take on the classic 'getting ready' pictures!
